College Graduates Looking For First Job

Gracious — so many people looking for a job right now.  I think a lot of it has to do with college graduations.  My daughter just graduated from UNC Greensboro and headed off the very next day to her first real job at Stages of St. Louis.  She’s a theatre techie.  She’s lucky that she found a job so quick.  When I get asked by grads about putting together their first resume, I tell them that the obvious first concern is that there isn’t a lot of work history.  What you use to flesh that out is any significant internship or volunteer situation whereby you had defined duties that you performed on a regular basis…even better if that volunteer job had a title, so give it one, if you can.  Your new employer will know that you are a grad without a lot of history — so don’t think you’ve got to fool them…because you won’t.   Another thing you can do is insert a “special skills” section whereby you list skills like special equipment you can operate, licenses or certifications you might hold, relatable talents or hobbies, languages, computer programs, grant-writing, etc.  Be honest, but remember, this is a marketing document.  The aim is to get the interview.  Got questions?  Post them to me.  And, if you want to keep up with career stuff, you can have this blog feed your to your e-mail.  Look for the link upper right corner of the screen.

  1. Hello!
My name is Elvis Lester and I am an Executive Recruiter with over 25 years experience. I have created a video (in a “giving back spirit) that is great for the young college graduate that focused on providing them motivation and skills in interviewing and securing the right job for themselves.

Here is the link to the video – Professions of a Headhunter: An Insiders’s Guide to InFluential InterViewing: http://www.screencast.com/t/lbQ64EGT

It is hosted at screencast.com an I’d be happy to have the link to the video posted on your site for access by young grads seeking employment or in need of a bit of an “edge”.

    Thanks for your consideration.
